Thinking of improving your future possibilities?
Want to secure a job or career? Want to always be in demand? The Oriska Jobs and Careers Center can put you on that path and make sure that you get paid while you work as an apprentice! For 25 years the Oriska Jobs and Careers Center staff, along with State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College has provided training to hundreds of people in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, steam fitting, electrician, and masonry to name a few. The Apprentice Program works under the guidance of the New York State Departments of Education and Labor and is ideally suited to create jobs for disadvantaged and minority persons and train them to fill those jobs.
Become a paid Apprentice
You will receive on-the-job training as well as classroom instruction to accelerate your mastery of a skill that is in demand. As an apprentice, you work under the guidance of more experienced workers called journeypersons. From them you learn the skills of the trade on the job and you will be paid union scale as an apprentice. Once you complete the program, you receive a Department of Labor Certificate confirming you are a competent Journeyperson. From this point, your opportunities are only limited by your skills. The time it takes to reach this point varies from three to five years depending on the occupation.
While the Oriska Jobs and Careers Center is primarily focused on assisting disadvantaged communities and providing opportunities to minorities, veterans, women and the disabled, we will work with anyone determined, dedicated and qualified. If you are 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED, you qualify. If you don’t have a GED, we will help you earn one.
